i attended a conference regarding magnetohydrodynamics in astrophysical objects here in the fishing village of aci trezza. mythology has it that polyphemus threw three giant rocks at the ships of odysseus, who had just blinded the cyclops' one eye. these are the cyclops islands seen in a few of these photos. geologically, they're columnar basalt and were thrust up by the volcanic action in the area.
